I continue to far exceed the levels set for Labrador Breeders by the KC Accredited Breeders Scheme.
Hip x-raying and clinical eye testing are the only tests Labrador breeders are required to undertake to comply with the Accredited Breeders scheme - unbelievably the result doesn't matter!

The Labradors we breed from at Brigburn have these basic tests but we of course take notice of the results and breed only from low scoring dogs with clear eye cert.
All breeding stock is also elbow x-rayed for signs elbow dysplasia and DNA tested for both PRCD1 and EIC.
Our Stud dogs are also further tested for CNM.
Elbow Dysplasia is a major problem in the breed and therefore I have used the scheme ever since it became available almost 20 years ago.
The Kennel Club seem to be selling/promoting the Accredited breeders scheme in two ways, firstly, the carrot of increased puppy sales and secondly, the stick of compulsion - I do not need any of these things and for therefore at this stage have decided that standards set by the scheme are so low that I will wait until KC scheme meets my own high standards before joining it.

After 29 years of breeding Labradors our philosophy remains the same, temperament, health and type are given equal importance in our breeding programme. What use a Labrador without a Labrador temperament or a Labrador that can't enjoy an active life through joint or eye problems, or for that matter a Labrador that doesn't look like a Labrador.
